The Novartis pharmaceutical facility in Ringaskiddy, Cork was the global healthcare giant’s first operation in Ireland, manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients for a range of cutting-edge medicines used in oncology, cardiovascular health, dermatology, central nervous systems and transplants. The site has undergone significant expansion since it first opened in 1994 and  PJ Hegarty was contracted to add more than 30,000m² of additional floorspace at the plant, including a new production building, an administration block, R&D laboratories, and a warehouse.

Extensions were carried out adjacent to live process buildings and existing pipe racks which remained fully operational during the project, requiring the implementation of a stringent permit system and strict safety protocols. The scope of our work included construction of a four-storey reinforced concrete extension on the east side of the existing annex building, and a manifold beam on the building’s west side. The build used structural steel frames encased with concrete, trocal roofing, and architectural profile cladding. We carried out an extensive fit-out of services and equipment, including laboratory equipment, patent and stud partitions, block work, acid tiling and finishes, plus advanced mechanical and electrical work.
